For those that don’t know, Hexbear has been back on lemmy for a few months now and can therefore federate with all of Lemmy again.

For those who don’t know Hexbear, they’re an instance based around left unity and more shitposty than us but you know, I still like to browse there because they’re very, very active and funny.

Hexbear will federate by the end of the month with Lemmygrad, which means you’ll be able to visit and interact with them from the “All” tab, and they can do likewise.

We expect that federation will be going smoothly and our two cultures won’t clash too much, but we also expect some friction at least in the beginning.

As a reminder, we apply Lemmygrad rules on Lemmygrad, and Hexbear will, I imagine, apply their rules on their instance. Likewise we won’t be moderating stuff that happens on Hexbear if it only concerns Hexbear. If it involves a Lemmygradian we might moderate (see PS below for more info on how that works).

For Hexbearians that visit Lemmygrad (I assume they’ll make the same post on their end so I won’t explain how Hexbear works), we’re principally Marxist-Leninist but allow non-marxists piecemeal as long as liberalism doesn’t come out of their mouths. It’s all by the principle of good faith; we do talk to people if they come here in good faith, which I have no doubt will be the case from Hexbear.

With that said we’ll also be more lenient towards Hexbear since with them, we form essentially the only left presence on Lemmy and we like them very much. We also urge everyone to be lenient with Hexbearians even if they’re not marxists.

Anyway, while Hexbear is more left unity, in all my time browsing there I’ve never really had to ask “is this person a marxist?” so their system seems to work well. However, I also expect that since their registrations are open, we might see wreckers and infiltrators make hexbear accounts to troll Lemmygrad. Likewise on their end, it’s possible someone requests an account on Lemmygrad to try and troll them. In which case we’ll deal with the offender on an individual basis.

If you have any questions about federation with Hexbear ask them below.

PS: the way comment/post reports work is that if you report a comment on Hexbear with your Lemmygrad account, we’ll see it. So please only report stuff you see on Hexbear if it’s something we should actually take a look at, or it’s something that breaks Hexbear’s rules cause your reports help them too.

Now this is what critical support between separate socialist powers looks like.

Red salute to our shitposting comrades-in-arms, willing to lay down their sanity against bad-faith actors in defense of the online socialist bloc. 🫡

I hope our Hexbearian neighbors enjoy their time spent here, and vice versa for lemmygradders.

You know how when you introduce two grown cats to one another you have to do it slowly and like, let them get used to each others scents a couple times before actually letting them interact and stuff? That’s what the past few weeks have felt like between the lemmygrad and Hexbear posts about federation. lmao. Like the admins of each side are each holding their cats like “oh god, oh fuck, please get along. Here smell each other first and get used to them we are all friends right?”

Meanwhile the cats are waiting to see if the other one glows in the dark and/or reads Harry Potter.

I assume the things that will cause the most conflict are the anarchists in Hexbear. Even though of course we disagree with anarchism because of philosophical and dialectical reasons, from what I’ve seen in their communities they are not the USSr le vad, I’ve seen them defending Cuba with a reasoning such as “it wouldn’t have make sense to dismantle the State at that point with so much exterior aggression from imperialist countries” which is something really reasonable and not like Redditors. So I hope we can just ignore the communities and posts we don’t care about and let them do as they please, there’s no need to create conflict when all in all we can get along mostly fine.

They remind me of the Communist Bloc over NationStates, they are also left unity and have quite a lot of MLs but they also accept anarchists and get along mostly fine. I wish they would be here in Lemmy, they have quite a lot of users, too.

??? I was there for like month and in that time i seen metric fuckton of anarkiddies, trots and maoists ganging up on ML’s in comments with the usual wall of text debatebro tactics. With moderation being very lenient to them.

That bunch being here would get banhammered in like 3 posts tops.

From what I’ve been reading and creators I’ve watched, (you can dump on that if you want, I’m working on learning from a lot of different angles) anarchists have a lot to offer to revolutions and the process, but as I understand it where we as communists differ is how we view centralism.

Whereas during revolution tactical anarchism is a big strength as separation but it has to have centralized goals, aims, and general guardrails. And once the revolution has began rolling, government being established and whatnot, the balance of bottom up for governance and top down for protection of rights and services becomes a lot more important.

I could be way off but my understanding is that a good portion of anarchists are comrades that have witnessed what liberal governments have done and are destroying and with their information decided that governments are not to be trusted, and also lack an understanding of theory.

But to the thing I’m actually replying to 🤣 I’ll ride with the rest of us and see how it goes

So this is what people mean by multipolarity. They’re generally very funny and cool people, I think federation will be very nice in the long run. Would be cool if eventually there could be some sort of instance-level subscribing so that their communities don’t get mixed with all the boring stuff on the rest of All.

Wait, so does that mean that if I report somebody over there over one of their rules (that don’t apply here), only the admins here will receive the report? Or will it go to both admin teams? I’m still not used to how federated moderation works.

BTW, the link to hexbear is wrong.

It will go to both admin teams + the mods of the community. Essentially reports get sent to all applicable users.

      > BTW, the link to hexbear is wrong.

Lol one more bug they’ll have to fix for next Lemmy release.

I think all relevant admins do. I report stuff on lemmy.ml sometimes, and they seem to act on it. I like to add a note “for lemmy.ml admin” to those reports, to make it clear.

I would love this. I only browse local on this account and use my lemmy.ml one for all/subscribed. It would be great if I could somehow include Hexbear in local.

Since I’m a reddit refugee I’m only familiar with the Lemmy/Hexbear history through occasional lore comments but if they are as you described I’m eager to see this federating happen. As far as the left goes, the more, the merrier, imo.

Left unity has been on my mind a ton lately so I’m eager to check their community out.

I can appreciate the phased in approach. I just selfishly wish the hexbear users mixed in with the orthodox liberals doing all the worldnews and politics posting ever since the huge influx of users from reddit.

This kind of happened before on Reddit. CTH, FC, and GZD both got huge. But then Reddit shut them down, protecting liberal sensibilities from facts and truths they couldn’t handle. It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out without a single corporation in control.

I think it will be possible for pressure groups to mislead instance owners that have less time to be fully informed, lower standards for evidence and an itchier admin-finger into defederating by presenting “evidence” in a very /r/subredditdrama way to create the largest outrage possible and weaponise userbases of an instance into getting their instance admins to defederate.

This will be a considerable problem and will test the admins of Hexbear on their diplomacy and networking skills. I’ve made it quite clear that Hexbear admins should be participating in as many backroom development groups as possible and actively helping other instance owners. This act alone creates a lot of goodwill that will make those owners much more willing to hear Hexbear admins in their own words before drama baiters.

Great points. There’s something about this in the Lemmy docs:

Another way to censor is through social pressure on admins. This can range from spamming reports for unwanted content, to public posts from influential community members demanding to take certain content down. Such pressure can keep mounting for days or weeks, making it seem like everyone supports these demands. But in fact it is often nothing more than a vocal minority. It is the task of admins to gauge the true opinion of their community. Community members should also push back if a minority tries to impose its views on everyone else.

              https://join-lemmy.org/docs/users/05-censorship-resistance.html

Maybe we’ve seen the start of this already with the scaremongering on .world.

if it gets too hot to handle they can always be defederated. no true liberals are in danger of learning the truth here.

I can only speak for what I’ve read, but the vibe over there seems to be part “whatev I don’t really care either way” and part “I cannot wait to bully redditors with a home turf advantage”.

Me personally, i had assumed for some reason that we were only federating with lemmygrad, so I read the above comment aboit federating with other instances with a huge fucking grin on my face, I feel like a demon someone is about to foolishly unleash from a gemstone.

I don’t see lemmy.ml in the list, but I hope that some day they do federate with it, because I really feel like the culture on lemmy.ml has negatively changed since the time I originally joined (especially with the reddit influx).
