Such a beautiful bird.
I remember seeing magpies for the first time when I visited Calgary. Soon after we arrived, we remarked at how beautiful there were, and a member of the hotel staff responded “they’re kind of a nuisance around here”. I still think they’re beautiful.
I’ve heard them described as a nuisance, but I’ve never understood why. I lived in Alaska for quite a while, where they’re common, and I never noticed any nuisance activity.
Here I have a short video of that magpie that might explain why they are considered a nuisance. The bird’s cry (in Edmonton at least) is loud; magpies are very social and chirp a lot.
Edit: the embed video has no sound! Dammit…
I guess I don’t mind bird sounds.
