Summary

With Donald Trump’s 2024 election win, young Gen Z voters like Kate, Holly, and Rachel are grappling with deepening divides with their Trump-supporting parents.

For many, these conflicts go beyond policy disagreements, touching on core values and morality. Parents once focused on fiscal conservatism have, in some cases, embraced conspiracy theories, creating painful rifts.

Studies suggest political divisions are increasingly seen as moral judgments, fostering a “mega-identity” where political views signify personal decency.

For these young adults, maintaining family connections amidst such ideological fractures has become challenging.

Remind me, who tried to violently overthrow the government because they didn’t like the election results?

Was it tolerance or the peace sign?

Not just their comment history, the history of their deleted comments in the lemmy.world modlog. Here’s a sampling:

I wonder if all the people who have had hysterectomies know they are no longer women?

I guess you can change genders.

I have a different opinion than you? I vote different than you? So, I’m not allowed to have an opinion around here? Is Lemmy for “democrats and liberals” only?

Here is my entire post. Please point out where specifically I said you were not allowed to have an opinion.

Or is it maybe possible that you aren’t as persecuted as you think you are?

Dude, I’ve been attacked left and right around here for having a different opinion, you know exactly what I mean…it’s the same shit on Reddit… Politics around here is Liberal/Democrat Politics only… and if you disagree, you’re down voted and called out like crazy…

No, I don’t know exactly what you mean because I don’t see anyone saying you aren’t allowed to have an opinion.

The thing you’re not allowed to have is not an opinion, it’s an opinion free of criticism. Sorry, no one gets to have that. No one here gets to be criticism-free. Lemmy is not under the control of an authoritarian government that refuses to allow certain positions to be criticized.

And the fact that your perception of being “attacked left and right” for your opinions doesn’t make you consider why that might be and if it might be you that’s the problem does not speak highly of you.
