I just started “playing” Street Complete and noticed there was no way to add stuff like new bemches amd trash cans to the map. I found the “create note” feature and started using that for this purpose.
Before I continue like thisI just wamted to check with you guys and see; Am I doing this right?
https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Hannes Knutsson/notes
I made some note about a new trash can, some new bench and some new stairs.
I’m not an expert, but if you press the layer button next to the three stripes on the top right corner, you can choose between different map layers - the second to last option has a green dot icon and is probably called something like “objects” (I’m using the German version, so I don’t know what the option is called in English). Then, after choosing a spot and pressing the plus button on the bottom left, you can add various objects like benches, trash cans, trees etc. yourself without having to leave a note for someone else to add it. But I think StreetComplete can only add little objects and metadata to already existing things, so for creating completely new streets, stairs, buildings etc. you have to use another OSM editor.
ah yeah, this is the Things overlay
This is exactly what I want. Thank you!
Yes, this is one way. But you can use StreetComplete’s overlay feature (since release https://github.com/streetcomplete/StreetComplete/releases/tag/v57.0) to directly add benches and trash cans. This helps in avoiding to flood the note system with very small map features. When the overlay feature was not implemented i also added a lot of notes for benches/bins, but got a lot attention of other mappers because of this. So i switched to using OSMTracker to take notes. But now, i am a very happy user of the new things overlay.
Adding stairs is also possible, but a bit more complicated, so adding a note is fine.
Do you know this overlay feature already? This is definitely worth to check out.
No, I thought the overlays were just sets of different types of quests I could use depending on what I wanted to work on.
Thanks for pointing this out!
How do you add stairs in StreetComplete? I already had a few situations where knowing how to add stairs on an existing path while being outside would have been really useful
You actually don’t need a quest, although it does make it easier to access. If you go to the “Surface” layer you can add steps like so:
- Tap on a path to select it.
- If you need to select a smaller section, tap the 3 dots in the bottom left and select “Split Way”.
- To make them steps, tap the 3 dots in the bottom left and tap “These are steps”.
I just tried it and it worked! Thank you so much, that was really helpful!
You need a quest for the way you want to add stairs to. Then when answering you select the other option (“Äh…”) different along the way (“entlang des weges unterschiedlich”). Now you can zoom in and split the way. Split it where the first and where the last step of the stairs is. Now you made three ways out of the one. The middle way should be the stairs. A quest should be ready to be answered for the way part to be stairs. Select this quest and go to other answers (“Äh…”) and select the option is actually steps (“Das ist eine Treppe”). Now you changed the way part to be stairs.
ah wow! Thank you very much!
You can also add those (and many more) with https://mapcomplete.org . This is a different app (or rather) a website, which was inspired by streetcomplete
There’s also SCEE available in the f-droid app repository, which is a modified version if street complete for more advanced editing.
No idea. But this looks like fun
I’m quite new to OSM mapping myself, but I found following flow working for me - while out, I create a note via Street Complete reminding me to add something (stairs, bench, wastebin), maybe take a photo and attach it to the note for reference, and later, when I get home, I add the thing in openstreetmap.org editor. Last step is to “resolve” the note I created.
I only tried this once or twice a few days ago, I’m still not sure it’s a good idea, maybe it’s discouraged to “spam” notes like this, and also I don’t know how long the attached photos stay hosted, increasing hosting costs to whoever pays the bills.
As I learnt from other comments in this thread; The “things” overlay in StreetComplete is great for adding stuff like this!
IIRC the photos stay hosted untill a week after the note is resolved. They are in the website if the developer
