Didnt BAR want to have different liveries in their cars in 1999(I think)? Bernie said no, so they made a split livery for both cars.
I mean, if you back to the early days of F1, teams barely had individual liveries. Multiple german teams would run silver liveries, multiple english teams green liveries, multiple italian teams red liveries.
And in the 80s with the dozens of entries you surely couldnt properly distinguish all teams either.
Apart from the engineering aspect of saving weight and optimizing the last little bit of airflow, I also believe these liveries are created primarily caring for still shots. Lots of finer details are great in that regard.
I’ve always found the cars around them better context for who they are than the helmets. The graphics the sometimes place on top of the cars to identify the drivers are annoying af.
