Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So, how’s it going?

So we were down to under 2 hours delay for lemmy.world->lemmy.nz federation, then the kbin thing happened again! We lost half the weekend’s progress! Currently sitting at around 6 hours delay. I had hoped to be back in sync by now but I think I’ll put all my hopes into Easter weekend, where hopefully traffic is lower and we will have 4 days in a row of weekend style traffic.

Luckily these actions were noticed earlier and the accounts banned by lemmy.world (preventing them passing on the federation) so it didn’t get as bad:

graph showing lag behind lemmy.world for lemmy.world->lemmy.nz federation. Graph goes up to 1.2 days a week and a half ago, slowly makes it's way down to 1.8 hours, then suddenly spikes again to 6 hours

Does anyone know why some people who park on the street put road cones at the front and back of their car? It seems like it makes getting in and out inconvenient and provides no benefit.

I figure it’s just entitled people using them to stop someone else parking there when they leave.

Some tradies working on a site near me do it to give a bit of warning around a corner.

They don’t actually put the cone around the corner and it’s a bit pointless, but the sign they hang off it shows the intent.

Is it to try to stop poor parallel parkers from bumping into them? Provide some cushioning?

Had my tonsils out on Saturday and feeling pretty messed up from the cocktail of drugs they’ve got me on. Currently watching all the fast and furious movies and then moving on to the Lord of the Rings extended editions.

I don’t want to annoy anybody but why aren’t people posting more stories here and other communities on lemmy.nz? There are major news events happening both here and overseas and it seems like nobody wants to discuss any of them.

What do you guys want to see in this community?

There are major news events happening both here

I guess they aren’t that major then? I mean if they are that major, then we’d probably already hear of it thru the grapevine, and if it’s something worth discussing I’m sure someone will post it here.

      and overseas

but this is lemmy.nz. I’d rather see overseas news posted on lemmy.world or something, unless it’s relevant to us.

What do you guys want to see in this community?

Personally, I think of this community as a way of reaching out to other kiwis, not as a news site. There are better places for news, IMO.

Obviously not the people here. That’s why I am puzzled. Wars, major policies being announced and passed by the government etc and nobody here seems to care at all.

What you’re probably noticing is a result of the federation lag from lemmy.world over the last 2 weeks. Content is about 6 hours behind (but has been over a day behind at one point perhaps 10 days ago), so even though it eventually comes across, the time delay will mean they don’t show in All, Hot, Active, etc, When they federate across, they will already be 6 hours old. Then the votes will also be 6 hours late.

We were almost up to date over the weekend, but the kbin issue threw us back another bunch.

We aren’t the only instance affected, but those furthest from the lemmy.world server in Finland are hit worst due to a bug in lemmy. This wasn’t known until recently as previously some content would be silently lost but now with the updated version of lemmy it keeps track and retries.

I am not talking about the global network. Just about the local communities. Seems like nobody here is interested in what’s happening in the country.

TBH I have no idea what local news there is, that isn’t political drama. Has something of note happened recently?

Sure. What’s the major NZ news that hasn’t been discussed here and isn’t political?

Why do you put the “isn’t political” qualifier on it? We don’t discuss politics either apparently even though there is a community called NZ politics. Hell we don’t seem to discuss anything on most days as nobody puts any kind of a link here.

I mean what isn’t political anyway? Are people vandalising the rainbow political? How about inflation? How about stories about climate change are they political?

Seems like politics effect every aspect of your life.

Currently we are heading towards the Budget. This means the media is and will be full of stories of things the government is considering doing, some confirmed, most are water-testing. For the most part, I don’t find any of these particularly worth discussing.

You mention vandalising rainbow crossings and climate change, both are items that have had links posted and plenty of discussion under them in the last few days. Inflation isn’t really a news item at the moment as it’s high, doing better than expected, but there’s not really anything to discuss.

You seem to feel like there’s big news not being discussed, I’m interested to know what I might have missed.
