The idea of disposable vapes is crazy to me. Like if you had a phone and when the battery ran out you couldn’t charge it you just threw it away. So much e-waste.
It’s also a bit sad that many age groups now vape more than they were smoking before, which you can see in some the graphs and info here.
I hope the long term effects of vaping do turn out to be as low as claimed.
I deleted all mine but the funny thing is back then they were all posts on people’s walls. You used to go to their wall and write something then they would come to yours to reply like a really bad chat UI.
If you went back to 2009 my posts would all be “That’s so true lol” or “Thursday at 7?” And make no sense out of that original context.
The article talks about not wanting to be reliant on a service, so I would guess they will try to reduce reliance on the cloud.
You’ll always want some level of cloud so maybe they will look at Owncloud / Nextcloud or some other open source solution they can run themselves?
No problem! I’ve used it for years, though my home assistant running on a Raspberry Pi 4 is now doing the pi-hole thing with adguard instead as the original one was having issues. Though you get weird DNS quirks when the machine running DNS also relies on the internet.
Plus that time I did a dumb thing in home assistant to see what would happen, and it brought the internet down.
So I am keen to get another Pi. I highly recommend keeping it on a dedicated device you never touch except for updates!
This was also my experience during the main sweep of the pandemic. It was so great getting to cut the commute and be home. Something I have luckily managed to largely continue. Prior to the pandemic my kid was in daycare pretty much 7:30-5:30 so it was really nice to not have to do that, plus during our lockdown we used to go for a family walk at lunchtime.
While some of the single guys I worked with hated staying home and were straight back in the office the moment they were allowed.
I ran it on an original Raspberry Pi B which has the same RAM and a slower CPU than the original Zero!
I’ve had exit interviews, and I’ve had jobs where I wish there was an exit interview. It’s possible to give feedback without burning bridges, and I don’t think I’ve ever left a job on bad terms.
I remember many years ago reading a contract I was signing, that was written by a union. I remember reading the section on leave entitlements, that spelt out in full detail what was only the minimum legal requirements at the time. I remember thinking how weird it was to have it in the contract when it was already the law.
Since then, National removed the requirement for employers to provide and specific amount of breaks (I think Labour brought this back) and now they are rolling back progress in the number of days of leave you’re entitled to. I understand very well now that the union wasn’t dumb they were experienced.
This is a typical government testing of the waters. They announce maybe they will do it, then see the public reaction to it. Now is a good time to react - perhaps with an email your local MP (or maybe to van Velden directly).
Ah I see. So RocketLab might be taking it a step further and putting more sensitive sensors on in the hope the additional data might help, with a secondary benefit being the PR from being able to reproduce audio from space.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard strimmer, though it does seem to be a thing when I search it up. I would say Weed eater, weed whacker, or line trimmer.
My Organic Maps doesn’t have traffic (or doesn’t for my area). I can’t see anything about it online either, except discussions about how it could be implemented.
Where do you find the traffic info? Even if zoomed in to New York I see nothing.
Now when I think about it, is it even possible to run lemmy on a cluster, like a regular web app, or is it a monolith?

It does seem to be out of date (for one, it mentions that pict-rs can’t be horizontally scaled due to the sled database, but pict-rs now supports postgres so maybe that has changed.
I know larger instances run a separate federation container and many instances (including mine) run multiple lemmy-ui containers for the front end, but as I understand it the Lemmy backend can only run as a single service.
Yeah I assumed it wasn’t just for the gimmick. Really cool about using the acoustic triangulation to identify the issue.
So SpaceX are already using microphones/vibration sensors so could have done the audio reproduction that RocketLab have done here?

Yes, such a cool addition to have space audio! Presumably there is a technical reason it’s worthwhile as well? Does it help with troubleshooting engine issues or something?
Hmm, it seems that with specifically the question type of multi choice, no comment, and other, it requires you put something in Other to even tick it. If you don’t have something to say then just put in a dot or space or whatever, I don’t think I can influence this, it’s part of the software.
Vote privacy can be tricky in an environment where every vote gets sent to thousands of instances and needs to be verified as legit via the ActivityPub protocol.
Piefed does a good job of this I think. If vote privacy is enabled, they create a second account that is used only for votes. Other instances see the votes and can validate them against the vote account but it’s not tied to the actual user (except in their home server database).
A benefit of this is that the vote account for the user is always the same, so you can still track vote manipulation, and ban the vote account if needed.
That seems somehow worse. People fill in the form and then it gets published as is on the website? Doesn’t seem worth publishing as news or an opinion piece, I’m not even sure what kind of media that’s supposed to be.
