I love this idea. I dream of being able to do more than just lock all my devices in a bottom drawer, buried in towels.
Hardware killswitches are good. But if you can’t get a phone with a hardware kill switch you trust, remove the microphone from the phone. Open it up desolder it whatever you need to do. Then use your headphone jack to plug in a headset to when you need a microphone
I didn’t read the article.
If you want privacy, use a microwave (cut the cord/unplug it to not blow up your mobile) and drape a thick towel over it. Takes care of EMF and sound too

wish s/he knew about Faraday Bags before cutting the cord of their microwave 🤣
I’ve wondered about faraday bags. Have even seen a few DIY sites that describe how to make them? Might be fun just to see if I could make it work.
The concept’s pretty simple. You want to make the gap between conductive elements smaller than the wavelength of the signal you want to capture.
Basically you’re creating a gaussian surface. So the smaller the wavelength from like microwave, the small area of e conductive grid needs to be. If your grids larger than your wavelength then the radio signals can still go through.
This is why a completely enclosed metal box is a very good Faraday cage.
You need a tin foil bodysuit with no openings. Like a bee’s keeper suit. The tin foil hat only blocks the head. The rest of the body which is composed of electrolyte rich water will act as an antenna
what if i put op’s phone in my tin foil hat? Would it work as a Faraday’s cage?
Only if you seal the hat into a tin foil bag, and ground it
Microwave/ferriday bags are fine. But they do not prevent the microphone from working. Sound waves will still go through a bag. And if the phone is compromised which we’re assuming it is in this model, then the phone can just record the audio and wait for a network signal to upload it later
But if you’re in a hurry. Put whatever you need in water. Water is an excellent conductor. Usually. So if you put something in water it’ll have a very hard time transmitting radio waves through it. If you want to preserve some electronics put them in a bag first.
Thin in comparison. But same principle, if you can create the cage from something else go for it
What is this exactly achieving?
Next I have an extra microwave I can cut the cord on, I will do it :) I assume the smaller ones would work as well, due to the shielding being the same? (Easier to store a smaller one, I’m thinking)
Yes, should be

i thought your comment was going to be a shitpost and just say microwave your phone. your phone cant spy on you if its been cooked
librem and pinephone have hardware kill switches, if privacy is so vital for you that you need to lock your “devices in a bottom drawer, buried in towels.”
Turns out hardware kills switches are only as good as the manufacturer’s trust value. Also, Librem and pinephone aren’t good enough quality for daily drivers yet. Maybe someday.
Also, it’s the idea of all the listening devices that “bugs” me (haha). Truly, if Apple/Google/Samsung wants to listen to me watch TV and type on my computer, hope they have fun :) But if I had a way to block that, just like I have uBlock Origin/NoScript/etc to block ads/spyware/etc? I’d do it in a heartbeat, just on principle.
