The Syrian transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, held a meeting with the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, during which the two parties reached an agreement to integrate the SDF into the institutions of the Syrian state.
During the meeting held today, Monday, March 10, an agreement was reached to guarantee the rights of all Syrians in representation and participation in the political process and all state institutions based on competence, regardless of their religious and ethnic backgrounds.
At this point it sounds to me like a PR agreement. I’m sure both sides will be watching another’s moves carefully and only follow through with the agreed points if they get assured by the next few months
The SDF cannot be trusted until it’s fully dissolved, but the recent moves by both the government and SDF suggest they’ve reached agreements on most of the governance and military composition stuff. So seems there will be no federalism 🎉
As someone who is living in a federalistic country, I’m not gonna lie: in my opinion centralized/centralistic government is a mistake for most countries around the globe, as it tends to neglect people living outside the capital region
