I wonder if this is just sampling bias or if there is some deeper systemic problem happening here. Have there always been this many air traffic accidents in the US or are we just seeing more reports recently?

Apparently, FAA is severely understaffed now, with a lot of traffic controllers doing jobs of multiple people. And it’s also worth that the remaining people are under more pressure meaning that they’re more likely to quit putting even more pressure on those that remain. So, this is a self reinforcing problem. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/over-90-percent-u-s-airport-towers-understaffed-air-traffic-controllers-data-shows/

the deeper systemic problem of having aircraft. the hittite empire had a perfect track record. so did the god damned romans. in fact, there were very very few crashes like this before 1903

Sampling bias. You could say the DC crash was a direct consequence of politics- an understaffed tower with one ATC controlling both helicopters and planes. The Pennsylvania one seems like it was just pilot disorientation and this one occurred while landing, the most dangerous point in a flight with like 50% of accidents occurring then. I don’t see any FAA underfunding connection with those.
