The Constitution recognizes and protects the rights of indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples.

The National Assembly of Nicaragua approved this Thursday, by unanimous vote, a new Political Constitution that seeks to consolidate the revolutionary State of the country and strengthen the model of direct democracy, where it is established that the people have a leading role in decision making.

The constitutional law, promoted by the Government of President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo, recognizes the importance of national heroes and heroines and reaffirms the Red and Black Flag as a patriotic symbol.

In addition, the constitutional text protects the State from those forces that threaten sovereignty, social justice and peace.

Among the novelties introduced by the new Constitution is the commitment to guarantee the participation of women in politics, from the Presidency to other areas of power, thus promoting gender equity.

Likewise, the rights of indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples are recognized and protected.

The new Magna Carta also reaffirms the social conquests achieved through the Revolution, such as access to free health and education, food security, and access to basic services.

Additionally, it establishes a new six-year term for the authorities elected in the last national, municipal and regional elections.

This document is presented as a reflection of the commitment of the Nicaraguan people to their sovereignty, independence and peace, marking a new cycle in the governance of the country.

To answer that question thoroughly, you will have to tell us what have you done so far:

    • Have you read other AES constitutions such as China’s, USSR’s or Cuba’s?

    • What do you need the constitution to say for you to consider it socialist?

    • Could you explain what do you mean by explicitly socialist?
