  • I’m trying to think what shattered the illusion for me… Weirdly, one of the first ones was when I was in high school, my Spanish teacher told me that in Spain, they had hardly any computers (she had just visited that summer). I told that to a friend of my dad, and he was like “uh… No, pretty much everyone has them”. Which wasn’t propaganda, but I think they was the first time I felt ashamed of my ignorance

Then in college, I was having a discussion about politics with someone from Paris, and mentioned offhand how it’s different because they’re a socialist country. He laughed and said “what? We’re not socialist”. That was pounded into me since elementary school, that the UK and France were socialists.

The guy owned a business, and I knew this and the fact he was fairly wealthy due to said business… And that’s when the illusion completely shattered, and I realized I was repeating shit I’d been taught without evaluating the information

Propaganda works. On all of us… It works less if you’re aware of it and examine your own beliefs, but that shit creeps in through the cracks. It’s insidious

  • That’s fascinating, I assumed it would be the default business to business debt, where most companies would basically hold onto the money until they’re asked for it, and just make damn sure they’ve accounted for it

I’m not a money guy, I just remember hearing some project managers talk about it and thought it was an interesting thing I’ve never considered, so there might be more to it

Can you tell me a bit about the legality of it? Is it just a matter of balancing your books to avoid getting in trouble, or is it different for individuals than businesses, or am I missing some piece of context and jumped to the wrong conclusion?

Just in general the motivation for you to do it that way for my own edification, I had no idea this kind of process existed

  • I just don’t know with this guy…

Like 4/5 things he says make me think “holy shit, yes! The science has been clear for decades, highly processed food is the primary cause of obesity and probably more, but no one has been willing to actually take a stand against it”. Even stuff like the camps for mental illness… Yeah, it sounds bad coming from an administration of fascists, but having a place where you can just exist as long as you need while doing chores is actually a sorely needed safety net that would genuinely make an enormous difference, depression, anxiety, ADHD, and many disorders are effectively treated by just letting people exist while doing basic labor

Then I get to the fifth thing, and I realize “holy shit, this guy is just actually insane”. It recontextualises the first 4, because if you get rid of highly processed food by killing the FDA people are just going to get straight up poisoned. And the mental health retreat turns into a work camp if it’s no longer completely voluntary

All in all, I don’t know how to feel about the guy. Like, vaccines are probably going to become a mess of proprietary bullshit if we cut regulation and stop pushing for heard immunity… But they’re probably going to become unaffordable and suffer the same fate with a replacement pick anyways

But I think he actually believes what he’s saying…I just think his brain is broken. Would it be better or worse to have someone who just wants deregulation because they were paid off? Would it even make a difference if the rest of the administration is going to use everything for the worst outcome through execution anyways?

I just don’t know how to feel about the guy… He’s insane, but I’m certain I won’t be on board with the replacement. He’s a real wild card for sure… Who knows what he would achieve in either direction

  • If they actually cared, just publish a standard that sites declare their minimum age range. Then make apple and Google add a “child mode” that filters this at the DNS level when you set up a device. As it’s opt-in, sites would be responsible for what they’re declaring

Tech savvy kids will probably be able to get past it, but let’s be honest… Nothing would stop them

Honestly, I’d even support something like this, and I think you’d get voluntary adoption. Advertisers would like this, it’s not very burdensome technically, and it would give a safer legal framework for everyone

But of course, this isn’t really about the kids…

  • Holy shit…I think short form video is unhealthy and I thought this red note thing was fabricated to recapture an audience, but maybe it’s organic (or maybe just too big and too fast for a walled garden to stay walled). And it just goes to show the one fundamental truth so many struggle with - people are people

I still firmly believe short form video is terrible, but these interactions are beautiful
