  • I think this is where fundamental differences in functional thought come into play. I abstract on a level where I can dwell on a subject for a few weeks and be productive. Beyond that, I get bored and lose interest to monotony. I need to spend that time unfettered. Primary school was a poor fit for me because I have excellent comprehension and self awareness. I tend to get hung up on very specific things where I need them answered right away. I need that connected flow to be unbroken as much as possible. So I find it deeply frustrating to conglomerate information. I don’t memorize anything. I need to have intuitively grounded information. I strongly believe that any subject that a person is unable to explain intuitively means they do not understand what they are talking about. Information without this intuitive connection has no long term value because it cannot be retained outside of constant use unless a person has total recall memory. I do not have such a gift so I do not care to pretend otherwise.

If I am in a class where I do not make the needed intuitive connection, no new information is useful to me. Having any entity that can get me past that challenge immediately is a priceless advantage to someone like me. I find no value in repetition. I only find value in application and across broad connecting spaces. I know that many people are very different in this respect, but also that I am not special or unique and my life and learning experience are shared by a significant and relevant part of the population. It is okay to be different. Every stereotype and simplification hurts someone. The only way to avoid hurting people as much as possible is to be liberal and withhold judgment in all possible cases. AI is a tool. Like any tool, it can be beneficial when used well and harmful in other contexts.

For instance, a base model is pretty bad at telling me what to do in emacs, but it is good at using a database to parse the help documentation to show me relevant information. Or like, when I am lonely from involuntary social isolation due to physical disability, I can spin up someone to talk to. When I am frustrated by interactions with other people, I can simulate them or discuss how I feel in depth. When I have some random idea or question I can talk about it right away. With emacs and org mode, I can turn that into markdown-like notes with gptel. It can create detailed plans and hierarchical notes and I can prompt within the tree to build out ideas and create and link documents. I don’t have to keep track of it all. I just ask the agent questions for it yo pull up the relevant buffers. As they say, org mode in emacs is like a second brain for planning and notes. With gptel, it becomes far more accessible to break through complexity both within Linux/emacs and within whatever subject one is interested in pursuing. There is much to be said about having an entity that can understand what the individual’s needs are and address them directly. I respect if you need a little bit of masochism to stay engaged. I like my share as a hardcore cyclists; no judgement. However, that learning experience is not universal to everyone. I quickly lose interest and motivation in that circumstance. I expect to understand the subject as it is explained by someone that truly understands what they are talking about. I’m really good at that kind of focused comprehension and very sensitive to poor quality educators that do not know the information they are paid to share.

Was the best part of agrarian subsistence turning the Earth by hand? Should we return to it. A person learns more and is more productive if they talk out an issue. Having someone else to bounce ideas off of is a good thing. Asking someone to do it for you has always been a thing. Individualized learning has long been the secret of academic success for the children of the super rich. Just pay a professor to tutor the individual child. AI is the democratization of this advantage. A person can explain what they do not know and get a direct answer. Even with a small model that I know is wrong, forming the questions in conversation often leads me to correct answers and what I do not know. It is far faster and more efficient than I ever experienced elsewhere in life.

It takes time to learn how to use the tool. I’m sure there were lots of people making stupid patterns with a plow at first too when it was new.

The creative process is about the results it produces, not how long one spent in frustration. Gatekeeping because of the time you wasted is Luddism or plain sadism.

Use open weights models running on enthusiast level hardware you control. Inference providers are junk and the source of most problems with ignorant people from both sides of the issue. Use llama.cpp and a 70B or larger quantized model with emacs and gptel. Then you are free as in a citizen in a democracy with autonomy.

It is Luddism to simplify your scope to this dichotomy. The competence is irrelevant. If you have dumb students or anyone uses the tool poorly, measure them as such. The tool is useful to many of us. People are stupid and always have been and so must be biased individually. Prejudice that stupidity instead of standardizing it culturally. You bring everyone down to the common denominator as a result of projecting onto everyone. Assuming and politicizing this lowest common denominator as a standard is insane. It is like the cancer of No Child Left Behind has consumed the world. It is a tool. Use it poorly and get called stupid or pay the consequences. If you assume everyone is stupid (*outwardly by policy) you will live in a dystopian stupid world. This boils down to the fundamentals of democracy and the unalienable right of all citizens in a democracy to have autonomy, self determinism, and full access to information. A key aspect of this is your right to choose including the right to be wrong, and the right to error and pay the consequences. You are supporting a regression of democracy and return to authoritarian feudal society when you fail to support a new form of information and the fundamental right of citizens to choose and to error. You cannot exist in a democracy without absolute freedom of information. It is everyone else’s job to objectively asses the truths of others for themselves. This is the critical high level scope at play that will impact the future far after we are all dead and forgotten. Our era will be remembered based upon this issue. You are deciding to create a dark age of neo feudalism that I wholly reject. I choose democracy. You have a right to believe whatever you would like. You have a right to be wrong as does everyone else. I have a right to all information and to judge for myself and I am not giving that away to anyone else for any reason because I do not give away my citizenship blindly to Luddism. I adapt to a new technological source of information and judge for myself. I expect you to do the same. If you try to take away my citizenship in a democracy, I will fight you. No one has a right to bowdlerize the information of another. You have every right to judge a person and their information based upon their individual merits.

This is as insane as all of my school teachers that insisted that I will not always carry a calculator. In the real world, this is insecure Luddism, and stupidity. No real employer is going to stop you from using AI, or a calculator for that matter. These are tools. Your calculator has a limited register size for computations. It truncates everything in real world math, so π is always wrong as are all of the other cosmological constants. All calculators fail at the real world in an absolute sense, but so do you. You are limited in the scope of a time constraint that prevents you from calculating π to extended precision. You are a flawed machine too, we all are. My mom is pretty good at spelling, but terrible at maps. My dad is good at taking action and doing some kind of task, but terrible at planning and abstractive thinking. AI is great for answering questions about information quickly. It is really good at collaborative writing where I heavily edit the output for the first ~1k tokens or write it myself, then I limit the model’s output to one sentence and add or alter keywords. Within around 4k-5k tokens, I am only writing a few key phrases and the model is absolutely writing in my words and in my voice far faster than I can type out my thoughts. Of course this is me running models offline on my hardware using open source tools. I also ban several keyword tokens that take away any patterns one might recognize as AI generated. No, I never use it here unless I have a good reason, and will always tell you so because we are digital neighbors and I care about you. I do not care about your biases with disrespect, but I do care when people are wrong.

If someone turns in math work specifically about π precision that is wrong because they do not know the limitations on their calculator, the should absolutely fail. If I did not teach them that π is truncated in all computers, I have failed. AI exists. Get over it. This dichotomous thinking and tribalism is insanely stupid barbarous primitivism. If you think AI is the appropriate tool and turn in work that is wrong, either I have failed to explain how AI is only correct around 80% of the time and that is not acceptable, or the student has displayed their irrational logic skills. If I use the tool to half my time spent researching, can use it for individualized learning, and half the time I spend writing, while turning in excellent work and displaying advanced understanding, I am demonstrably top of my class. It is a tool, and only a tool. Those that react in some dichotomous repulsion to AI should be purged for exactly the same reason as anyone that uses the tool poorly or to cheat. Both are equally incompetent.

  • I totally get that part of orbitals. I guess I am just bad at explaining the magnitude of abstraction I am asking here.

Like I am not at all asking about simple, average, or conventional objects and orbits.

So let’s say the Sol system is a large valley of a gravity well. That means Earth is perched somewhere up the side of that valley. If I’m an interstellar object, I’m likely to be captured into an orbit but my vector is not as constrained to orbital norms. The question is about edge cases so all possible scenarios are relevant and there are no statistical simplifications.

As I enter the Sol system, I must travel down into the valley to intercept Earth. Obviously, if I do so on the down hill side of gravity, I am going to hit with tremendous velocity regardless of my interstellar velocity vector. But I can have any configuration of factors or composition too. I do not need to park in this crazy lemming’s yard as a whole object or even land softly. My only constraint is that I must put a rock on the ground without a big explosion. So let’s call that landing the world’s lightest car as a minimum, and doing so with less energy than a ton of TNT and hope this rat has a basement bunker or he’ll be riding the sunset clouds with Science Santa.

Instead of intersecting the Earth on the downward slope of the Sol gravity well, let’s go much deeper and graze Sol itself. Perhaps through ablation, perhaps through particle interaction, or perhaps through some breaking and shedding of materials I drop enough velocity to loop back up the Sol gravity well and into Earth’s vicinity.

Now, I am faced with a new substantial but much smaller gravity-valley. I could use Luna to slow me to a crawl when I cross cislunar space, but there is still a gravity chasm below me.

I am a conglomeration of materials. Perhaps I am a spinning contact binary, perhaps I have a planetesimal fragment once a magma chamber on an alien world with unusual fractional crystalization. Perhaps I have a pancake core of well fused pumice or scoria surrounded by other materials fused or not.

So perhaps I cannot descend from cislunar directly, but I have no constraint on my origin like some object assumed to be on the orbital plane of Sol. I can enter the system from any orientation and while elliptical dynamics are a statistical probability, this post question is about exceptions not statistical simplification.

So I am going to single shot this thing. As I fall into the gravity-valley, any means of slowing is possible. So let’s say I have an ideal shape to skip across the atmosphere and some composition capable of ablation without turning me into a bolide air burst. I’m able to travel abnormally deep into the atmosphere while ablating some unusual volcanic layer formed on my former anoxic stellar alien world of our galaxy. The energy builds to impart a spin as I enter deep into Earth’s atmosphere. As I reach perigee, forces within fracture and release an ultralight core fragment, a pancake shaped disc of an ultra low density pumice at the ideal moment to cancel considerable velocity. The rest of me that continues is irrelevant. I am now this ultra low density aerodynamic pancake released into the atmosphere. All I must do is get to the ground without more than a ton of TNT in energy.

For every rule; an exception. The post is a request for abstractive absurdity such as this. Perhaps this is still flawed. At some level, isn’t the theory of panspermia ultimately an assumption of such a scenario. It was a thought experiment for fun, and a litmus test of Lemmy’s overall engagement and Machiavellian spectrum in a random time slice. My offbeat sense of humor probably doesn’t help here, like calling la grange points listening to ZZ Top, or Barycenter Bary-the-narcissist – as a hint that I am not asking for anything normal, conventional, or basic, or at least that is how I thought of these. It is all for kicks and giggles with digital neighbors in the public commons anyways. So, thanks for responding.

  • Aren’t you assuming a solar system object though? Forget probabilities and statistics; what about an interstellar object with ideal keyholes to cancel out velocities coming from any vector.

I can’t get the picture out of my head of a plane stalling a few feet off the ground and coming to rest, or really the countless similar odd scenarios with a coin rolling around a large vortex toy/simulator that is used for grade school children to help illustrate physics and gravity. There are times when the coin loses all of its velocity and stops suddenly. Or better yet, if you’ve ever played golf and had a ball round the cup and get tossed back out right on the edge of the cup.

You can have any trope you’d like. Indestructible, natural ablatives, astroid made of Avi Loeb mystery meat stellar sail, ideal shapes, anything, heck detach pieces from a spinning planet killer moments before primary impact destroys everything.

  • We were a whole lot poorer when everything was only regional. We need a balance. We will be a whole lot poorer and belligerent as a species if we are totally insular.

We are actually pretty close to being able to defeat the resource scarcity of our planetary prison. Gravitational differentiation is a bitch for sequestering almost all of Earth’s heavy resources after the Theia collision and the last time the entire surface of Earth was molten. The continents are like the flux or froth that rises to the surface. Nearly all of the heavy elements on the surface of the planet are from astroid collisions that have happened since the continents formed. The thing is, there are these things called m-type asteroids that are remnants of planetesimal cores broken apart in the early formation of the Sol system. Some of these large m-type asteroids are in near Earth orbits. These are differentiated, aka concentrated with rare elements. Fully accessing just one of these has a potential to completely upend what wealth means and all of our financial institutions. It could easily dwarf all human resource wealth that has ever been accessed on the surface of Earth. Accessing this kind of resource wealth will drive us into space in the future at large scales. We already have the materials science to build O’Neill cylinders that have Earth like centrifugal gravity and are 9.1 km in diameter by ~30 kilometers long. The scientific papers establishing this were published by Dr. O’Neill in the 1970s. The only thing holding us back is the will and the resources. We only get to that future if we put aside tribalism and work together.

We don’t need this dichotomous oversimplification of all or nothing. We need balance and we need to stop the culture of unregulated unethical capitalism. Capitalism must be regulated like the drug addicted STI ridden whore that it is and handled like a worthless ragdoll because this is what it really is. Corporations are disposable worthless things. They are not people. They should be the homeless beggars. They are the fodder on the front lines of conflict because corporations and companies are not people and killing them is a great and valiant thing. New companies can fill the voids. This is the whole point in capitalism. The problem is that we have let companies rule over people and that is feudalism. It is not a democracy at all. Whores cannot lead or rule us or we fall apart. They have no ethics, no values. They would just as soon kill you, but that is okay only because they are not people and they must die with extreme prejudice. Businesses have no rights except to be useful for a time. Being established as a business must become a liability not an asset because it is within real open market capitalism. No one gets all the gambles right every time unless they are cheating and in both cases they must die.

  • Dichotomous logic is a sign of ignorant stupidity. Nothing about real disability is binary. Such a view is as murderous in the real world as were Nazi SS working in a concentration camp.

I would know. I am physically disabled, appear functional, but suffer far more than you could ever know. In the next decade I will die on a cold rainy night in a gutter somewhere after my folks die and I am homeless. I was killed 11 years ago, but I get to die slowly for 2 decades. I did nothing wrong. I just rode a bicycle to work and encountered a very stupid person driving into another at an unfortunate time that then hit me. It only takes one bad day to be exactly where I am. If you do not care about the social safety net for people like me, you deserve to learn the hard way.

There are only around 6 people on all of Lemmy causing the downvoting according to someone self hosting that shared their admin view. I find it insane that any admins have not banned these people. If 0.0001% of people are able to impact 50k people with their disordered and divergent mental health, a responsible course of action is blatantly obvious and necessary.
