I got a used Nissan Leaf (that was one year old, so people didn’t realize it was used). Everyone was constantly telling me that I should have bought used because the lithium for a new battery is worse than anything else in the world. When I told them it was used, they either said I should have gotten an older one, or they just stopped talking about it.

The news in Germany is also shockingly biased. Obviously things like the Bild were going to be, but even on more mainstream news, you don’t hear about Palestinian casualties, nor do you hear interviews with Palestinians or Israelis against of the war (at most you get an Israeli who’s slightly critical of methods, but still thinks Israel should be actively defending itself). If you’re a German who doesn’t look at international sources for news, it would be very strange not to support Israel, based on what you’re hearing. It’s infuriating, but it’s also difficult to change. I don’t know what it would take for the German media to stop supporting them.

That’s disappointing, as I haven’t said anything untrue, but it doesn’t seem to have an impact on you, so you’re probably correct that there’s no point in continuing. I would encourage you to read more about Joe Lieberman, though.

You do you and take care of yourself, I don’t think anyone reasonable would begrudge you that.

The amount of time people spend on it probably correlates to the effect they think it will have on their and others’ lives, so it makes sense that some will be more dedicated than most. For example, if my landlord raised my rent by €25 euros, I probably wouldn’t complain about it to people. If he raised it by €250, I’d move (if possible) and bitch about it to everyone (whether I could move or not), and if he raised it by €2500, I’d reach out to my neighbors and legal aid.

The degree to which people are able to enjoy the rest of their lives similarly depends on how strongly they and others are affected by the laws.

It’s great that you’re a positive force in your local community. People trying to hold politicians accountable (through publicizing their policy mistakes to the voting public) are also trying to have a positive impact in the larger community. Both are necessary, but not everyone needs to or is able to do both (and there are of course more effective ways to push for political reform, but those require even more personal involvement).

I always read in the news about how everything is going to fall apart because a certain person got elected, but then nothing happens and everything stays the same. Events like COVID or the war in Ukraine had far greater consequences on my daily life, and even those barely affected me.

I don’t know how to say this without it sounding mean, but I truly don’t mean it like an insult: that’s privilege. I remember being a 17 year old white girl, thinking I had solved the issue of cops, because it always worked out when I tried it. That’s not what you’re doing, but it’s similar.

How many people died in your country under COVID? That’s a huge number of people for whom things are not basically the same, it’s just luck that they are for you. Something like 200 women have died under abortion restrictions, and more will as the laws get stricter around the country (which depends on who’s elected). A friend of mine wanted to try for a second, but she’s in Texas, so she decided not to. I don’t know how many women make that decision, but it’s a way for even more to be directly influenced by politics in a way that doesn’t make news.

So 25k people vs 3 million? That’s not called listening to your constituents. He had been a democrat until a few years before this and broke ranks because of the Iraq war, so his disagreement on this issue came as a surprise to many Connecticut voters.

So we agree that Joe Lieberman voted against the interests of his constituents (the difference between the 1/3 and 2/3 of savings).

Some, but a lot don’t. Even if that was the only way to reduce healthcare costs, it would be a great application for eminent domain. Luckily, everyone else has a better solution than ours.

Other countries with universal healthcare don’t pay nearly as much as Americans do and not every industry needs to be saved. Health insurance companies are not even the biggest insurance employer in Connecticut, the vast majority of people in Connecticut had a net loss in not getting single payer through.

Of course we were affected. The last year I lived in Connecticut, I paid $13k for healthcare, as a mostly healthy person in my 20s.

That democrats tread on your rights. I don’t think it’s a real sign because of that implication, so it’s probably just another case of fake outrage

Joe Lieberman, an independent who caucused with democrats from Connecticut, listened to the businesses in Connecticut, not his constituents. They didn’t re-elect him, but that’s cold comfort.
