Ignoring the 1984 element for now, this has interested me for a long time.

In the US if a movie contains nudity then its age classification is going to be high, the same as if it contained murder, torture, or other violent actions.

In Germany, anecdotally, nudity is rated as appropriate for a much younger audience than violence.

It makes a lot of sense to me, but I understand why it would take forever to adjust from “puritanical” values to something more open as an entire nation, for example.

I feel like I’m more inclined to go with the FSK rating than the US equivalents, or the UK ones, but that’s my viewpoint, complete with all my bias.

Mathew Baynton is great. I recommend watching the UK series Ghosts to get an idea of him. Horrible Histories is pretty good too, especially if you’ve got young-ish kids, or just want to learn some history in the most disgusting ways possible.

That’s not the only foreign city I’ve ever been to. Paris was the worst one I can think of, or at least top 3.

I spent one day in Paris, let me give you the highlights…

1. We arrived, left the train station, and were immediately accosted by like 5 people trying to sell us friendship bracelets, or little string bracelets
2. We left the area and walked to a local Metro station to get across the city, we wanted to check something, so we went to the nearby information section, where the lady refused to speak any English, despite the signage indicating that English was spoken there
3. We figured it out on our own and entered the station, which smelled exactly and completely of piss
4. We got off the train and walked along the river for about 10 seconds before being accosted by a conman pretending we’d just dropped some jewelry. Apparently it’s a common con. We ignored him and moved on.
5. We had an ok time for the rest of the day trip, until we got back to the original train station, where we sat in a café beside a family who decided to change their kid’s diaper at their table, and then threw the used one to the nearest bin like they were playing cornhole

I’m not in a big rush to go back.

I’m English, so I’m sure the feeling’s mutual. ;-)

Is it that surprising that your average person in another country is easy to get on with? I’ve been to a fair few different countries and the everyday people you interact with are lovely (except France).

It’s the fucking politicians you’ve got to look out for, and not just the foreign ones.

It used to be a convenient way to keep up with friends and share photos. It took a while to turn into a politics-filled hell-hole where making people argue in the comments got prioritized because any engagement is good engagement.

I don’t know if there’s a way around that, but I suspect there is. I wouldn’t mind someone trying.

I went to Singapore to chew gum, watch porn online, be gay, have 1 gram of cannabis, and I’m all out of gum, which is good, because all of those things are illegal.

There’s been one political party in power for decades. A guy went to the place where you’re allowed (gee thanks) to speak freely, and then got arrested for speaking freely. You can get the death sentence for having some drugs. All male citizens have to do a year of military service.

It’s a lovely place to spend a short time, but there’s no way I’d ever live there.
