Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was it like the first time you had to call 911?
2·19 days agoI forgot: I called two more times recently because my phone screen would not turn on, and apparently there’s a setting in LineageOS to call the emergencies if you fiddle with the buttons, so as to make the situation even worse, and then there’s a voice telling you you’re about to talk to someone and you can’t hang up! (Edit: I suppose they would call back in any case).
Happened twice before I found the setting. So yeah, I wasted their time, again.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was it like the first time you had to call 911?
7·19 days ago15 years ago, young student, I’m walking home around midnight. In the middle of a bridge I see a human shape jumping in the water. I’m not 100% sure. I ask a group of people further up on the bridge if they saw anything, they didn’t, but said I still should call 112.
One or two police cars came, and then one (or 2?) fire truck. Lots of people. Some went with full diving equipment in the water.
They couldn’t find anyone, said it was surprising as the water was very low. The fireman captain gave me the stinkeye.
Police had left their lightbar on and the car wouldn’t start (I think that was the reason) so I helped to push.
I had to come to the police station and tell what I saw many, many times.
Only years later did I realize I was being interrogated, to find out if my story had holes. I was quite naive (dumb works too).I wasn’t drunk, depressed, or had any kind of weird fantasies that would make me want to invent a story. It’s the only time I called the cops in my life.
All cops were friendly, even though they must’ve thought I was lying or had too much imagination.
Did someone jump? Now I think not. But at the time I really thought there was a possibility, and I wouldn’t take any chances. I just didn’t realize how many people and resources would be involved.

15·2 months agoI was living with roommates clueless about house maintenance stuff.
So one day I explain we should purge the radiators. Did I forget to say "purge the air"? I dont know. But the bucket I told em to use to catch water spilling one roommate thought was supposed to be used to empty the radiators. I was on the computer and saw him from the corner of my eye go empty his bucket a few times before I caught on.

0·2 months agoI checked the drive’s health with badblocks tonight, which wiped everything unfortunately.
Then I tried another distro (Ubuntu) and the issue was gone.I didn’t check the hash for failing files, but I downloaded with rsync also and the issue still happened.
Thank you very much for your help though. When I find the time I’ll reinstall Fedora, and if the issue repeats itself I’ll do more tests.

0·2 months agoYeah I thought of checking dmesg too late, I was already running the - destructive - badblocks command…
It is finishing I think, and found zero errors.
My plan now is to install a different distribution to see if it makes a difference. I the error reappears I’ll remember to check the logs.

Linux Questions@lemmy.zip•[Thinkpad T14] Files become corrupted but only when downloadedEnglish
0·2 months agoBrowsing and streaming no issues. Or any other daily computer task, all fine. No weird behavior, lags or freezes, nothing.
I’ve checked the source files, they’re ok. I’ve even downloaded them from another computer, and transferred them on the Thinkpad with a USB stick, and they can be opened normally. Downloads are coming from various websites, a VPS, a local server.
badblock run
I’ll do that now.
Thanks for the help!!!

She adds little sugar, maybe that’s a reason.

Steam@lemmy.ml•72% of devs believe Steam has a monopoly on PC games, according to study
0·2 months ago… Am I still on lemmy?
The whole thread is a corporate talk andAppleSteam fan mix. Your first paragraph…We’re discussing a monopoly, and all I am reading is how good a product they’re making.
Shouldn’t the discussion also be about their costs, margins?
Is the market difficult to enter by its nature? How much would the users and developers benefit from more competition? And I still dont know their cut.

I’m the same. But of course I do daily the parts where the sun don’t shine.
Some people really do smell more than others, with the same washing habits.
I myself prefer a slight body odor in others, even light sweat (not stink!). Although some perfumes smell really good. But that agressive deodorant smell I hate.
