I heard Americans talk about the holidays policies of their employers and it got me thinking “What the …?”

They had something below 30 days, sick days included.

Sick days included?! In Germany, if your sick during your holidays, you get the holidays back. Because your supposed to rest and relax during your holidays and not have a fever or whatever…

Right. Just keep voting for those ‘business friendly’ politicians and it’ll never happen.

Well, if 66% of Americans voted for Bernie, that European system would suddenly be a lot closer.

They’re all “business friendly”. Sleepy Joe took more bribes… uh, I mean “campaign contributions”, (@ 6 mil) than the Orange Asshole did (@ 3 mil) from big pharma.

Three decades of working in the American corporate machine has transformed me into a person who despises my job, industry, and working in general, yet I feel sinful if I sleep in until five on Saturday mornings and spend useless time doing laundry and buying groceries that reduces my profit making hours for the company beast.

I’m a shell of a human being with fifteen years to go, and the only thing that keeps me going is knowing I can steal a day or two away every six months or so.

Even then, it’s taken years for the profit machine to learn that those sparse days are not to be spent by me answering work calls.

I know Europe isn’t perfect, but they sure seem to place a hell of a lot more emphasis on living before they die.

You shouldn’t feel like that at all, put the phone down and fuck off when you’re on PTO. Don’t answer calls on the weekends unless they’re house on fire style. Clock out at 5 and forget work. Corps are not loyal to you, so you don’t owe them any loyalty.

Would it make sense to find a new job? I hate American corporate culture just as much, and it frustrates me that we have such an unhealthy attitude towards leisure and enjoyment of life in this country, but as long as I have options, I’m not interested in working for a company where the expectation is regular weekend work (even if it means reducing my lifetime earning potential).

Unions. They got us our leave. It’s not filthy commie nonsense, it’s basic human rights.

In general, I feel the American labour movement could benefit from checking out the history of the labour movement in other countries. Not everything is transferrable but a lot of it is.

My dad would be in the 66% until someone whispers “guns” at which point his eyes roll back into his head and he begins screaming GUNSN GUNS! GUUUNS!
