The sad thing is that recently most of the discounts have been more or less lukewarm, very few games have 80-90% discounts

When was the last time we even had a discount bigger than 50% on a good game?

For all young padawans, back in the day we got legit 90% off brand new games. I’d spend $100 and get 2, 4 month old games and the rest would be sweet under $5 deals. And deals were every hour. So if you missed a sale you could miss out on a massive sale. It was a legit event that earned the hype. Then they brought in refunds and people abused it. But sales back in the day were fun

Refunds came about because of EU laws. Those flash sales would have resulted in a bunch of refunds so they stopped doing them at the same time. They actively encouraged (and still do) people to refund & rebuy for cheaper at any time whether any steam sale is involved or not as long as within the refund terms.

Personally, I only miss the mini games they had during those sales but I hated the flash sales themselves. Had to waste time researching when the games wanted were going to be the cheapest during the flash sale. Then had to hope it was during some free point of the day, notification/alarm worked, or that didn’t forget to create the notification/alarm. Then had to hope the store wasn’t overloaded because everyone else was also trying to get in on time limited sales.

I just picked up the civ5 bundle for 90% off about a month ago. It is a 13 year old game, but it’s still a great game.

I don’t know when exactly it happened, maybe it was a slow creep, but steam sales no longer mean anything. Just put games that you actually want on your wishlist and wait a year for it to go on sale once, maybe twice in a year. They used to have really good games going for less than $10 and I could buy a few that I had zero intention of buying. I’m a big boy, I don’t have to pirate, I’m willing to pay $30 for a handful of games I know I will play eventually.

Now it’s a handful of seemingly corporately predetermined sellers. I’ll pay for games and media, if you make it cheap and easy. Oh well, cracked games run faster anyways ¯_(ツ)_/¯

It was when they were forced to accept refunds.

The next year the Steam sale did away with flash sales and all the discounts were noticeably less.

Games would go on sale for example 50% off and people would buy them. Then they would have a flash sale for 90% off. People who bought the game for 50% off then refunded and bought it at 90% off. This resulted in lots of refunds steam had to process. Since they couldn’t get rid of refunding games they got rid of flash sales.

I just recently bought an AAA game 75% off, which I was relatively surprised about. Not 80-90% but definitely not lukewarm, it’s actually a really good game.
