Andrew J. Robinson wanted there to be a gay attraction, so he played the character that way. I believe Alexander Siddig played along with that.

The top (Berman, probably the studio people) absolutely did not want gay characters. So now you have actors playing with gay intent, writers looking at this from a distance, and a whole production trying to avoid being too gay for the homophobic top production staff to notice. You end up with Garak being “straight”.

There was an intent to make Bashir and Garak a thing, but that was killed off by Berman and the gayness was played down.

Ya ive read that the actor played him gay but I didn’t learn that till after I’d watched it all so I guess knowing that he is straight makes it even harder for me to see it. Tbh I could have a guy hit on me and not know it and I do have some pretty “weird” ideas/beliefs and stuff that I don’t think a lot of mainstream straight guys have or would even agree with
