So I set up my test lab with a domain controller and some clients and changing things in Windows 11 is just a complete nightmare. I see that they finally added the option to where you can ungroup icons on the task bar in this latest update but holy shit man it’s been 2 years… and we’re barely getting basic functionality that’s been in Windows 10 for 8 years now? How does a development team this size get lead so far astray from their target audience?

Don’t even get me started on the Xbox bullshit that comes on a Windows pro machine used in a business environment. I’m getting fed up with windows more and more every day.

Also all these extra bullshit apps like Chat, Teams home. Why are they there ootb on a pro license?

I’m not surprised. The amount of fat I cut from the stock windows 7 image to create an internal image at a past job was insane enough. This was a hospital system, so HIPAA was a huge deal. We had to remove as much telemetry and bloatware as possible and it was a nightmare even then. So glad I got out of that field altogether.

Totally agree, I think Win11 is still not worth upgrading too.

l got laughed at on Reddit (and probably will here too) for expecting a small task bar in Win11. I’ll not switch if it means downgrading compared to Win10. I don’t need big icons and waste of space.

Worry not, soon you won’t need a taskbar at all. We’ll all be using copilot to yell into our mic 17 times until it opens the right app.

I’m finding it works pretty well on my Surface Pro, and I think that’s where it tends to shine, but I will not upgrade my PC.

The WSL stuff alone is pretty much worth it/mandatory, if that’s the kind of stuff you care about. Otherwise I indeed don’t see much reason to upgrade…

I totally get you. I use Win11 at home with a big high Resolution monitor so I don’t mind the huge task bar too much but my 1080p work monitors would suck to use without a compact task bar. Thankfully there’s no chance that my workplace will be looking at Win11 any time soon (embedded software developer).

Been using ExplorerPatcher to bring all the taskbar needs from windows 10 (you can even mix menus: I like the new bluetooth in the control center, makes it easier to connect a device)

The fact we need to use the registry for basic customization is quite sad.

Registry hacks used to be for very obscure and advanced customization, now it’s used for the basics we used to have.

Exactly. And win11 is so full of employee distractions without a way to disable except registry and other powershell nonsense.

Doesn’t work properly, you’ll get clipping stuff and something with the clock will be off. It will also likely revert with updates.
