Also Linux generally had better 1% lows, lower RAM usage, and lower CPU usage. A big part of this is that AMD no longer updates the Windows drivers for the RX 580.

absolute workhorse of a card, still have one on a very old Dell with CachyOS on it.
CachyOS is also a fantastic distro. I use the CachyOS kernel on my NixOS laptop. And the recent CachyOS Protons on steam are great. Also have some great Arch repos. It’s just a great distro that tries to improve just about everything and does it well.
Are the cachy protons worth running instead of GE? Or is it on a case by case basis?
Lately I’ve been playing the Last Caretaker on steam and for the first time I found myself shopping around for Protein’s because Proton Experimental couldn’t run the game. proton-cachyos was the winner out of all that I tried. Some wouldn’t play the menu videos, some didn’t play the intro video. The CachyOS proton ran everything perfectly.
If I recall the point of the cachy protons is so you don’t need to install GE on cachy. So if you already have GE then it’s pointless. And if you already have cachy then installing GE is pointless.
I mean I haven’t noticed any real differences and the performance on both have been great. If you’re using CachyOS they’re in there by default so no need to install something like ProtonUP-QT to easily get the GE protons if you don’t want to.

Probably worth remembering that with inflation that’s ~$320 now, so about the level of a 9060 XT, which is also a pretty capable card.
Still rocking an rx580. When I clicked reccomend graphics settings for armored core 6 and boulders Gate 3 it still reccomend ultra/high settings. That card is a fucking workhorse
I paid 600 cdn for a 1080ti sc2 which had 11gb… can still use it for games today if I wanted too.
these days, the high end cards would be $4000, have a high chance to burn my entire house down and are plagued with issues and glitches on windows.
It’s too bad the 10-series Linux drivers aren’t updated anymore. I put Bazzite on my friend’s computer, but it doesn’t support the Gaming Mode and has to boot into regular desktop mode instead, then Steam starts in Big Picture mode. Not a huge difference but not quite as slick, maybe uses slightly more resources too.

Yeah. Had the 480 8GB and in December 2016 it was running 250. The 580 was basically the same GPU with some minor tweaks and changes plus faster clock speeds.
My stepson’s system was using it with ChimeraOS (similar to SteamOS) until there was some driver issues then upgraded it to a RX 7600. If they didn’t have the issue with the drivers it would probably still be chugging along.
