How sound waves could help track space junk and meteors

The title is pretty misleading. Sound, actually infrasound, is used to track them AFTER they reach our atmosphere. Basically just used to help figure out where they will land.
So, pretty unless for what the title suggests.
I was about to say, sound doesn’t travel through space.
