In an article from this past October, Ben Lorber essentially predicts what happened to Mahmoud Khalil this week. Project Esther is a brainchild of the Heritage Foundation, the same people who brought us Project 2025, aka The Blueprint for Accelerating the Process of Turning America into a Fascist Hellscape.

Project Esther is a plan to use the accusation of antisemitism as a cudgel to shut down pro-Palestine groups, but the definitions it uses are so broad that they could probably apply to just about any group on the left.

If this sounds like McCarthyism, that’s because it is. It is also being driven and led not by Jews but by Christian Zionists, who are heavily influential in the American government and who see Jews and the state of Israel less as equals and more as pawns in their vision of bringing about the end of the world.

Lorber concludes: “In the end, Project Esther is merely the latest in a tired trend of Christian nationalists using Jews as a fig leaf for their authoritarian, illiberal agenda. Unsurprisingly, their agenda doesn’t bode well for Palestinians, social movements, or anyone else in our multiracial democracy—including Jews.”
