Earlier this week, the current régime disappeared Mahmoud Khalil for political speech, denied him access to his lawyer, and moved him rapidly through different detention centers to keep him away from his wife, his lawyers, and the public. This horrendous abuse of power and violation of the First Amendment points to one of the fundamental tenets of Never Again Action: never again means never again for anyone.
The Trump Administration has arrested and detained Mahmoud Khalil, a permanent resident, explicitly for his role in advocating for a Free Palestine. Everyone in America should be worried, since Trump and company have promised this will be the “first of many.” And by “many,” they don’t just mean anyone from any particular group, viewpoint, or movement—they mean anyone who dares to oppose them and their Christian Nationalist intentions.
In a statement worth reading in its entirety, Silky Shah writes: “When you accept that some people are deserving of detention and deportation, the scope of who is eligible is always under threat of expanding.”
Never Again Action’s statement emphasizes: “Now, it is more important than ever that Jews demand: no deportations in our name.”
