As if terrorizing entire communities with the threat of deportation and family separation was not enough, the Immigration Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE), the uniformed officers stomping around many streets leaving fear and heartbreak in their wake, have made some serious data errors.
Geographer Austin Kocher breaks down the statistical errors, as well as analyzing the hard data behind DHS Commissioner Kristi Noem’s false claim that ICE arrests have increased by 627% in the new régime. He also notes an increase since January in the number of immigrants in detention who have committed only crimes of immigration, such as the civil misdemeanor of undocumented crossing. This is consistent with the current administration’s draconian enforcement priorities.
If you’re looking for actual numbers, it is worth following Kocher’s substack, as he is a wonder of data and analysis.
