This includes the Mediterranean and Atlantic ways
“These figures are evidence of a profound failure of rescue and protection systems,” the group’s founder, Helena Maleno, said in a statement. “More than 10,400 people dead or missing in a single year is an unacceptable tragedy.”
The group also noted “the situations of extreme vulnerability” that push migrants “to throw themselves into the sea in very precarious conditions.” These include “violence, discrimination, racism, deportations, and sexual violence,” as well as “being forced to survive in extreme conditions” prior to departure.
They’re evidence of the brutality of the global capitalist empire and the still-lingering tendrils of colonization, and the desperation it causes. It’s pretty tiresome how many “groups” there are who are incapable of saying words like capitalism, imperialism, or colonization, and instead try talk around it into individualist causes.
i watched a documentary on lengths that the spanish go through to prevent people from claiming asylum in ceuta and melilla and it convinced me to stop bothering with moving to spain to avoid my country’s descent into fascism.
the documentary explained that; so long as the person can walk into the asylum office and speak to an agent; they’re guaranteed refugee status and won’t be deported. then the documentary showed the miles worth 20-foot walls and fences with razor wire at the top; dogs and police on continuous and heavily patrols; and various other booby traps meant to ensure that the people are both turned away or prevented from ever setting foot in that asylum office.
the worst part for me in the documentary is when they explained that the asylum agents and office personnel were in on this charade and would frequently pretend that they didn’t notice when the person actually made it past the gauntlet of barriers and literally acted like they could see or hear the person scream/crying/begging them for help right in front of their faces. it got so bad that the offices remodeled so that the agents and staff were situated behind bank-teller-like glass windows to enable them to close the blinds and shut the window if they decided to ignore the suffering human being in front of their eyes like americans pretend they can’t see a beggar on the streets.
i’ve been happy to see the spanish officials tweak their tune to atleast give token support to the plight of people like the palestinians in their genocide; but i can’t help but wonder if it’s also cover for something much worse.
fuck spain
