This article originally appeared in People's World. On Aug. 16, Ukraine’s secret police force — the SBU, or Security Service of Ukraine — announced it had arrested Georgi Buiko, a veteran Communist Party member and leader of the Ukrainian Anti-Fascist Committee.
From having up to 25% of the vote in some oblasts and 115.000 members to being banned, having their symbols forbidden and their leaders arrested, in the span of just 3 years. What happened to the KPU was a tragedy.
