Google’s Gmail service is, without doubt, the most used free email platform on the planet, with almost 2 billion daily users. Let that sink in for a moment. Now you should appreciate why it’s also a prime target for hackers, scammers and other threats. Many of these, sadly but inevitably, are driven by AI tools. Which is why there has been concern over headlines this week that Google is letting its Gemini Deep Research tool read Gmail messages, as well as data from Docs, Drive and Chat. However, there’s a major privacy and security caveat: you have to give it permission first.
Even if I need to give permission first, I won’t trust it.
Any good alternatives?
Free ones? No not really they all seem to come with a catch. Paid? Pretty much any that have proof their government has asked for records that they literally can not give.
Depends on what you’re looking for. mailbox.org is great if you want to use your own email client, tuta is good if you desire privacy and encryption
Can it… not?
Well. I’m glad I’ve started moving everything to Proton
I think it’s really cute that these AI pushers keep pretending we have to opt-in before their machines harvest our data. Of course we don’t.
Honestly, I would assume this whole article is sort of bollocks – Gemini has almost certainly been trained on everybody’s Gmail accounts since before Gemini was announced 😂
1st of all: using gmail is not smart
but despite the sensationalist title you need to opt in
FYI, all Google drive data already goes through AI, “to protect the children”.
Who in their right mind would give it permission?
You seem to have no idea how the average person uses IT. For them it will be awesome that Gmail can now automatically do this or that.
Anybody who gets asked 100 times and misclicks once.
Cool, now it can read all the shitty spam or truth social begging emails I get.
