In August, Paxton’s office announced a series of raids on the homes of people suspected of being part of a vote harvesting scheme.

That included several elderly election volunteers, a longtime Latino political operative and a Democratic state House candidate, all of whom said they were just doing normal campaign and get-out-the-vote-related activity. None of those people were charged this week.

The investigation was referred to the attorney general’s office by a local Republican district attorney, Audrey Louis, in November 2022.

The League of United Latin American Citizens quickly condemned the raids as politically motivated, coming just months before last year’s presidential election. San Antonio state Sens. Jose Menendez and Roland Gutierrez also called for a Senate investigation into Paxton’s probe.

And, just be clear, ballot harvesting is just a nonsense boogeyman term for delivering someone’s ballot for them, right?
