Bong Joon-ho’s “Mickey 17” is both a critique of gangster capitalism and an argument in favor of proletarian revolution.

Just watched this earlier today. I thought it was good, a little bit of “fairy tale for adults”, but that’s not a bad thing.

The social commentary is relatively toned down. IMO, the people who are complaining about the political elements are in a sense validating the critiques (one wouldn’t complain if one didn’t see any parallels).

When I saw it earlier this week with someone and we both thought there were branching stories they started to travel down that ultimately were never followed or explained.

Unless I missed something, there was never any branching in the movie. To be honest, it didn’t see like that kind of movie, there was never a thriller/mystery vibe. In many ways it was a very straightforward narrative and almost classical high-level story format.

If you don’t mind, please share what part you thought was branching (via spoiler tag?), I am genuinely curious. I don’t remember being distracted, I enjoy the movie. 😄

Not sure if the spoiler tag is working, tried to send this earlier but lemm.ee was down:

!spoiler The brunette love interest. Came in, showed interest in splitting attention with Mickey, disappeared the rest of the movie until she shows up with a random girl at the end.

The dictator/politician guy getting puked on by the alien and having a noticeable cough in the later scenes, with no payoff.

The guy in the pigeon suit? Never explained.

The secret team on the deck that facilitated the mutiny by recording the torture of the alien, never explained or hinted at until they literally show up and say “we need more for our team”.

The weird Church/cult vibe and hymn? Never explored.

How the alien knew his name before they had a translator or knew English? Alien’s answer? “SECRET”!<

Ah, I thought you meant branching in context of the main hook. Something along the lines of Primer.

Yeah, I totally agree with you regarding those points, it was pretty strange.

Btw, spoilers don’t seem to work. I think the last bit of code needs to be on separate line.

            SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

            Tap for spoiler

Another thing I noticed was one of the very last scenes where they were re-printing a new Mark Ruffalo. I wondered if that was supposed to be some kind of big different ending, but turned out to just be Mickey having fantasize the whole thing. I thought they were gonna show that the thing that they were demonizing they were doing the entire time.
